A day with Bead Magicians

Carole Tucker of Bead Magicians asked me last summer if I would give a talk and to demonstrate at the group’s April 2012 meeting.

I was delighted to take her up on her offer, and packed up my (very small) car with my ‘on the road’ demonstration kit and some of my latest beads, ready for action yesterday morning!

The ladies were very welcoming, and I really enjoyed my day with them.

I started by explaining not just the process of making beads using glass, but how I came across this arresting craft back in July 2003.  Rather than coming to lampwork glass beadmaking as a result of working with beads, I had been captivated by a demonstration by Di East at Art in Action.  At the time, I wasn’t really bothered that what she was making was a bead – I just wanted to melt glass!  Over the years I’ve enjoyed learning about glass, and beads, and it was a treat to be able to share my journey yesterday.

I demonstrated to five groups of ladies during the day, and remembered all the way through that brilliant ‘thunderbolt’ moment when I came across this compelling art form for the first time.

It was enlightening to spend the day with so many highly talented dyed-in-the-wool beaders, and I learned a great deal about aspects of beads and beading that I hadn’t encountered before.

Wonderful – Bead Magic!
